Dr. Dan Zhang

Viola, Violin

Dan Zhang, a native Chinese violist, began playing violin at the age of 4, and transferred to viola during her study at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Dan received her Master of Music degree from Yale School of Music in 2013. In 2011 she finished her Artist Diploma from Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA, America. She received her Doctor of Music Degree at The Catholic University of America in D.C. in 2019.

     She was the prizewinner of the First China Viola Festival and Competition in 2007, and won 1st Prize in the Shenandoah Conservatory concerto competition in 2010. In 2015 She won the Special Gold Prize of the 3rd Hong Kong International Strings Competition, she also participated in the International Max Rostal Competition 2015 in Berlin, and in 2019, she was the finalist of the International Anton Rubinstein Viola Competition in Dusseldorf, Germany. Dan has been playing at venues such as, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center the Great Hall and Terrence Theater, the Great Hall of People in Beijing, and concert halls in Japan, Germany and Argentina.  

Dan has performed with multiple orchestras including the Washington National Opera Orchestra, National Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony, and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony. She participated in Master Music Course Japan festival in Japan, 2015, and Bach Cantata Music Festival in Germany, 2015, also she was invited to participate in the Kneisal Hall Music Festival for many times. She had also attended the International Jungen Orchesterakademie 2019 in Germany.

 

     Besides giving concerts, Dan is also a passionate music teacher, she was a teaching artist at Yale School of Music college department, she is also the founder and viola faculty at “The Sound of Pianos, Strings and Voice” International Music Festival in Xi’an, China. Her former students had been admitted to Juilliard School Pre-college, Peabody Institute of Music, Temple University, and section leaders of other All State orchestras.
