Composition, Jazz Piano
Quentin Walston is a pianist, composer, and music educator living in Loudoun County, Virginia. Quentin surprisingly began his musical career outside of jazz and away from the piano. As the vocalist and harmonica player of folk/old-time band, Jake and the Burtones, Quentin played around Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Maryland—eventually recording an EP with the band in 2010. Later, he began a solo career, releasing a folk album in 2012. This LP featured Quentin on vocals, guitar, harmonica, ukulele, and his first released track on piano.
Quentin went on to study piano, jazz, and composition at James Madison University. Focusing on improvisation, composition, and arranging, his musical style blended influences from Thelonious Monk to Maria Schneider. After graduating college, Quentin has played in and started numerous bands including Grooveyard, The Green Chimneys, Voyage, and Sweet Something. Quentin’s current duo, trio, and quartet groups are exciting laboratories for spontaneity and new directions.
Quentin Walston released his first jazz EP, “Introduction”, in March of 2017. His selections of jazz standards, performed in solo, duo, and trio contexts, displayed his arranging and improvisation style. Quentin released his first full-length album in June of 2019. This LP, “Play”, features eight compositions and one arrangement of a Thelonious Monk favorite, “Well You Needn’t”. The record includes music written for piano, bass, drums, saxophone, and trumpet. The opening track “Fox Talks Voice Box” also includes Quentin’s debut recording on a Hammond C3 organ. “Play” is available for purchase and streaming on Amazon, iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, and many other platforms.
Quentin Walston can be heard performing solo, in his own bands, and as the pianist of Sweet Something in the Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland area. Quentin also teaches piano, jazz, and composition at the Catoctin School of Music in Leesburg, Virginia, where he has taught since the spring of 2016.
