Dr. Huai-En Tsai

Trombone, Tuba, Piano, Euph.

Dr. Huai-En Tsai currently the principal trombonist at Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Washington, Dr. Huai-En Tsai enjoys his career of being a solo, chamber and orchestral musician as well as a scholar and music teacher. He performed with top-notch artists including members of Vienna Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, National Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, U.S. Marine Band, U.S. Army Band, Canadian Brass, and Grammy nominee. His distinguished performances, talks and scholarly works made appearances on media, including: The Roll Call, The Liberty Times, The World Journal, Baltimore Examiners, Baltimore City Paper, The Cumberland Times-News, Washington Chinese News, The Epoch Times, The Towerlight of Towson University, The Albuquerque Tribune, The ITA Journal, WBJC, WETA, NER of Taiwan, SET NEWS TV Show and Taiwan Public TV’s Morning News.
A native of Taiwan, Huai-En began his music study with piano at the age of five. While in Taiwan, he completed his undergraduate study at Soochow University as a music major and served as the principal trombonist at Taipei Civic Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, he received a scholarship to study with James Olin at Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where he obtained a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. Tsai is an “Edwards Instruments Trombone Artist.”

As a scholar, Huai-En’s presentation: Utilizing Four Pragmatic Syllables to Arise Efficiency of Articulation on Playing the Trombone in 2014 NATPA Conference in Vancouver, BC and his lecture: The History of Trombone Study in U.S. Conservatories in 2016 HIC-Arts and Humanity in Honolulu, HI both made a big success. His historical presentation and performance opened the 2017 American Trombone Workshop in Arlington, VA. His recent engagements including a solo performance at the International Trombone Festival in Osaka, Japan, masterclasses in Boston University, Frostburg State University, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Xiamen University in China as well as lectures in University of Maryland-College Park, Nanhua University in Taiwan and Soochow University in Taiwan. He served as Faculty of Brass and Chamber Music at Frostburg State University Summer Music Academy during 2016-2018. Currently, he is a professor of music at Midwest University-Washington Campus.
